Privacy Notice

I, Dawn Smith of New Day Rising therapy, am committed to ensuring that any personal data I hold about you is protected in accordance with the terms of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and to the responsible and secure use of your personal data. This privacy notice explains what personal data I collect, why I collect it, how I use it, and how I protect it.

What personal data do I collect?

Personal details that I collect about you include:

  • Your name, date of birth, home address, phone number, email address, and registered GP. 
  • I also maintain brief therapy session notes. These are anonymised with a unique code ie: NDR1, and are stored separately from any information containing identifying details.

Why do I collect this information and the legal basis for handling your data

Your personal information will be used only to provide you with my services and to give you information relating to my services. This includes using your data to:

  • Contact you about arranging your counselling.
  • Contact you in case of an emergency.
  • Keep you updated with any information regarding the service I provide.
  • To ensure the counselling I offer you is professional and ethical.

Who I share your data with

I will not share your personal data with any other person or organisation without your knowledge and permission unless:

  •  There is a legal requirement, ie: prevention of an act of terrorism.
  •  There is a child or adult safeguarding issue, or a perceived risk of harm to yourself or a vulnerable other. In such a case I may need to share information with your GP or the police.

I will never share your data with any other organisation to use for their own purposes.

How do I protect your data?

I protect unauthorised access to your personal date and prevent it from being lost, accidentally destroyed, misused or disclosed by: 

  • Password protection on my computer and on computer files containing personal data
  • All emails messages, mobile phone voicemails and text messages being deleted once they are no longer necessary in relation to the purposes for which they were processed.
  • Mobile phone protected by a PIN code.
  • Client phone numbers are stored in my phone with a unique code and the client’s initials next to it; ie: NDR3-LT

How long do I retain your data?

Your personal details and counselling record are stored securely for up to 7 years after you leave the service and then destroyed, according to legal requirements. 

Your rights with respect to your data

You have the right to:

  • Request access, amend or correct your personal data.
  • Request that we transfer your personal data to another person.

How to complain

If you have any complaints about this privacy notice, or how I handle your data please email me at dawn@newdayrising.com  and I will respond within 30 days. If you continue to have concerns about the way your data is handled you have the right to complain to the Information Commisioner’s Office (ICO) – the statutory body which oversees data protection law.

Changes to this notice

I will keep this notice under regular review. You will be notified of any changes where appropriate.
